Mini-Redwood Adventure

Cory and I seized the opportunity to get away this week and took a little (36hr) trip to the Redwoods in Northern Cali. We had initially planned to stay for a few days but rain, like torrential down pour rain, I-know-I'm-an-Oregonian but like serious rain, kind of got the best of us. We made the whole trip more about the adventure than the destination and because of that it made for a really awesome experience.

We drove down I-5 then took a detour down a Hwy that boasted some pretty old towns. (See Drain and Scottsburg) Our goal was the Oregon Coast down 101 till we got to the Redwoods.

We stopped for a Clam Chowder lunch at Harbor Light Family Restaurant in Reedsport. It was pretty dang good chowder.

Also, my hubby's stache he has going on … I fell a little more in love with it (and him) this week.

We made one final stop in Brookings for a Soy Chai Latte I was craving and then it was onwards to the Redwoods.

We decided to stay at Jedadiah Smith Campground. After almost 7 hours of driving we were pretty happy to be there and were even happier there were plenty of spots to choose from. All the campgrounds were filled with reservations but had first come walk up sites available. We might have been crossing our fingers the whole way down.

They had some pretty big trees at the camp! Later we learned these were actually the smallest of the Redwoods, but eh we were impressed.

You can't really tell by the photo, but there were red and yellow leaves scattered all over the ground. Its official..Fall is here. I'm not gonna lie, I was pretty content being outside to soak up the crisp air. Also, they had signs like those (see below photo) all over the trails. I was sad the girls couldn't tag along but happy we didn't try to sneak them in. It would have been pretty obvious.

It was so beautiful. So serene just being out in nature. Clean air. No cell service. No agenda. Exactly what we needed.

We most definitely will be making a trip again in the next few years to visit the massive trees down in Humboldt Redwood State Park, home of the Avenue of the Giants. This trip gave us just what we wanted and we are happy for that.

We played lots of scrabble that evening, ate some really good soup, and cozied up under a fire. Like I said, we had planned to be there for several nights but woke up to puddles everywhere. We both just looked at each other and knew that we were ready for home. I'm glad these Redwoods aren't too far away. We will definitely be back! And maybe in the summer next time :)

To lots more camping adventures,

xo leah
